Recumbent 2020
Digital prints of photographs of porcelain sculpture
This photograph forms part of a series transitioning from the structured, radially symmetrical and outward-moving works of Chaos Contained, towards a more informal, reflective process in which the human form is transformed into bodies with basic anatomies. The catalyst for these works was an encounter with the naked bodies of two fledgeling birds fallen from their nest above the studio. Their fragility and vulnerability made me think of how tragedy is a source of poetic narrative and the fine line that is trodden when moments of suffering are transformed into aesthetic outcomes. I wanted to shape an object and its image that transcended into something beyond the catharsis of the moment.
